ASTON VILLA are keen on signing ‘the new Alan Hansen’ as Dean Smith looks to bolster his defensive ranks.
Aston Villa are on the charge up the Championship table and could make the play-offs this term.
They’ve been off the pace for most of the campaign but have climbed into sixth and a look a good bet to stay there.
Regardless of what division they’ll be playing in next season, Villa chief Smith wants to raid Barnsley for centre-back Liam Lindsay.
The Mirror report a £5m raid is being planned for the player who cost Barnsley just £350,000 last summer.
He’s rated as the best player to have come out of Partick since Liverpool legend Alan Hansen 40 years ago.
Villa aren’t the only club chasing Lindsay, though.
Villa beat fifth-place Middlesbrough 3-0 last time out and manager Smith admits confidence is high.
“It was a really good, positive performance against a good team with good players,” he said.
“They were very difficult to break down in the first 15 minutes and were a threat on the counter, but we finally got our rewards.
Jack Grealish ‘best player’ in the Championship says pundit
“(Climbing into the top six) puts a spring in the step but we know there are teams with games in hand over us.
“We have just got to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s nice to go into the international break with four wins on the spin.”
